The presidential election wasn’t the only defeat Micheál Martin had to absorb over the weekend.
His beloved Nemo Rangers, featuring his son and namesake in goal, were edged out in the Cork senior football final.
There was further disappointment for the extended Martin clan when Rathnure were narrowly beaten in the Wexford senior hurling final.
Kyle Martin (no relation to the Taoiseach) was in goal, while Stephen Martin (no relation of Kyle or the Taoiseach) was captain and corner-back.
His brother Michael was an unused sub, and is also the club secretary.
Michael is also a Nuffield scholar, and will be presenting his paper on beef finishing systems in two weeks’ time.
His dad, also Michael Martin, is a well-known farmer and contractor.
