The average price per acre of farmland sold in Ireland rose to €6,534 in 2019 according to latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

In total, 33,274ac of agricultural land were sold in Ireland last year. Agricultural land is land sold purely for agricultural use with no additional entitlements (eg dwellings) attached to the land.

The majority of land sold was permanent grassland accounting for €195.5m of the €207.1m sold. It averaged €6,390, while tillage ground sold for a significantly higher average of €11,331.

The west – made up of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon – was the region with the largest volume of land sold, with 9,508ac changing hands. The lowest volume of sales was in the southeast where only 2,157ac were sold in counties Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford.

Regions

There was a sharp contrast in the average price achieved by land in different areas of the country. In the mid-east region, which consists of the commuter belt counties that encircle Dublin, land sold for an average of €10,117.

The lowest price per acre was in the border counties of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan were €4,905 was the average paid.

The average price nationally was up almost €100 on the year before but CSO statistician Anthony Dawson said caution should be used when comparing figures as the make up of transactions vary from year to year.
