At least 35 calves and three maiden heifers will be auctioned off in Corrin Mart this Saturday 2 March as part of the Rearing to Go awareness campaign.

The aim of the auction is to support Teac Tom, the Thomas Hayes Trust, which provides support and counselling to people contemplating suicide and to families who have lost a family member to suicide.

Dairy farmer and one of the main organisers of Rearing to Go Peter Hynes spoke with the Irish Farmers Journal.

“The main aim of Rearing to Go is to create awareness around mental health in farming,” he said.

“There is some fantastic stock up for auction, 35 calves, three maiden heifers, three barrels of teat dip and there’s a €500 Zurich insurance voucher for the highest-priced lot on the day.

“It’s a family day out and there’ll be calves from all corners of the country there. The biggest thing we want to do is create as much awareness of mental health and there’s a lot more planned for Rearing to Go after the sale,” he said.

John ‘Bull’ Hayes is one of the auctioneers at the event on the day. The first calf will be in the ring for 12pm and the bidding will start from there.
