There was a strong clearance rate of over 96% at the Mayo Mule and Greyface Group’s premier sale of 1,100 ewe hoggets, which took place on Friday 23 August.
Group chair Joe Scahill said demand was solid throughout, with the general run of prices for nice-quality hoggets ranging from €155 to €175 for 75% to 80% of the entry.
Good presentation

Joe commented that the good year was reflected in the prime manner in which sheep were presented for sale.
Prices for the top 20% of sheep ranged in general from €180 to €200, with buyers reluctant to pass the €200 mark.

A few pens sold from €200 to €210, while the top price of €220 was paid for a prizewinning pen of large-framed quality hoggets.
Joe said the sale has set a good benchmark for Saturday’s ewe lamb sale, where the cream of the crop of breeders' progeny will be presented. The sale of 2,000 ewe lambs takes place in Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, Co Mayo, and commences at 11am.
