When asked to advise those seeking employment, Jack Kennedy, economist with Indeed, said that highlighting your skillset is paramount when it comes to recruitment.

In our agri jobs survey, employers highlighted a diverse range of requirements from self-motivation and communication skills to financial acumen and commercial experience when asked what skillsets they were looking for. You might have the skills but how do you put them across to employers successfully?

When it comes to your CV, Jack Kennedy advises to “highlight your ‘soft skills’. These are skills like communication, problem-solving and leadership. They are highly valued because they can be difficult to teach and are often inherent to our personalities. When looking at skills that transfer across professions, soft skills tend to be needed across the board, so are valuable to highlight on your CV.

Writing, teamwork and presentation skills are just some of the skills you develop in school and college

“While hard skills are necessary for completing technical tasks, soft skills will make you the kind of worker employers want to hire, keep and promote.”

Work experience and skills learned are vital in making your CV stand out. “Showcase all your relevant experience. If you are a college student with little work experience, showcase your relevant coursework on your CV. Writing, teamwork and presentation skills are just some of the skills you develop in school and college,” adds Jack.

Most people entering the workforce now are from Gen Z, the first generation of true digital natives

He encourages those seeking employment to use their “digital advantage” in the workplace. “Most people entering the workforce now are from Gen Z, the first generation of true digital natives. Technology is second nature to them. This gives them a great advantage in the current world of work. With so many jobs moving remotely, they are likely to adapt to this new environment much better than their predecessors in what is becoming an increasingly digital world.

“Your CV should be powerful but brief. Make it easy for the recruiter to quickly understand how your history and experience align with the job they’re offering,” Jack says.
