A status orange thunder warning is currently in effect for Kildare, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary.

The warning is in place until 10pm this evening, with Met Éireann predicting torrential downpours and lightning strikes.

Many farmers will be concerned that it will derail plans to cut and bale silage over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The latest status orange warning comes on top of a status yellow rain warning that was issued yesterday.

High-intensity rainfall leading to possible spot flooding is expected in some counties, with up to 50mm expected to fall in some areas.

The areas and counties affected by the status yellow warning include Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.

The yellow warning will remain in place until 10pm this evening.
