A status orange thunder warning is currently in effect for Kildare, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary.
The warning is in place until 10pm this evening, with Met Éireann predicting torrential downpours and lightning strikes.
Many farmers will be concerned that it will derail plans to cut and bale silage over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Warm and humid for the rest of today, with sunny breaks in parts, but cloudy and misty conditions prevailing in other areas, accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms.
