Though high winds caused numerous of marquees to collapse and the cancellation of the event by NPA officials there was still plenty of action in Screggan on Wednesday.

Unbeknownst to many visitors, all of the competitors took part in today’s classes as per usual. Competitors commenced ploughing at the regular time of 10am, with competition finishing around 2pm.

Strong crowds of spectators

Despite the conditions, competitors stated that spectator numbers were higher than usual.

“Normally people just go to the stands and forget about the ploughing, but the stands were all closed today”

Today's classes included the senior conventional plough class (day one), senior reversible plough class (day one), farmerette conventional plough class, Macra two row conventional plough class, vintage two furrow trailer plough class, vintage two furrow mounted plough class and senior horse plough class.

With the exception of shaky sight poles during opening splits, the weather had no adverse effect on competitors match game.

Reaction

As per tradition, competition was intense in the farmerette conventional class. We caught up with Rachel O’Driscoll of Cork shortly after she had finished her plot.

We also caught up with Frank Callanan, Co.Wexford, winner of the under-28 conventional class who is also ploughing in the senior conventional plough class today.
