The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) began an intensive farm inspection campaign at the end of April with a focus on the safe use of tractors and machinery.

As part of this campaign, it has produced a video detailing the checks farmers should carry out at the start of every season and regularly throughout it.

Checks

The HSA recommended farmers focus on the following areas:

  • 1 Check that the tyres are properly inflated for the work they are about to do. Wheels should be inflated if necessary
  • 2 All hydraulics should have an adequate oil supply with no leaks. The engine oil level should also be checked.
  • 3 Ensure the brake latch is in the correct position. The foot brake and handbrake must also be in perfect working order.
  • 4 All mirrors should be intact and adjusted for the driver.
  • 5 The tractor's lights should be working and clean to ensure maximum visibility. Dirty or broken doors and windows can also impair visibility.
