Watch: five checks to carry out for tractor safety
The Health and Safety Authority has produced a video detailing the safety checks farmers should carry out on their tractor to ensure it is safe to use.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) began an intensive farm inspection campaign at the end of April with a focus on the safe use of tractors and machinery.
As part of this campaign, it has produced a video detailing the checks farmers should carry out at the start of every season and regularly throughout it.

Checks
The HSA recommended farmers focus on the following areas:
1 Check that the tyres are properly inflated for the work they are about to do. Wheels should be inflated if necessary
2 All hydraulics should have an adequate oil supply with no leaks. The engine oil level should also be checked.
3 Ensure the brake latch is in the correct position. The foot brake and handbrake must also be in perfect working order.
4 All mirrors should be intact and adjusted for the driver.
5 The tractor's lights should be working and clean to ensure maximum visibility. Dirty or broken doors and windows can also impair visibility.
