In the second instalment of our Way Out West suckler series, we travel to Ballinrobe, Co Mayo to meet Martin Shaughnessy.
Farm facts
Martin farms part-time, while also working in Aurivo Livestock Mart.
He owns 36ac of good-quality ground and has another 10ac of rented land.
Martin runs a herd of 18 suckler cows, predominantly Limousin-cross.
He used 100% AI, mainly Belgian Blue bulls such as STQ and BB2280.
Some Limousin sires – EBY and LM2014 – are used on maiden heifers. Herd replacements are bought in.
Martin's strategy is to breed weanling bulls for export and weanling heifers for show breeding.
Martin also runs a flock of 120 ewes, selling lambs through the South-Mayo Lamb Producer group.
Muscle masterclass in Mayo.
