Yara, one of Europe’s largest nitrogen fertiliser producers, has announced a temporary curtailment of production at two plants in Italy and France.

The two plants have a combined annual capacity of one million tonnes of ammonia and 0.9m tonnes of urea.

Together with maintenance at other Yara facilities, Yara’s European ammonia and urea production is expected to be operating at approximately 45% of capacity by the end of this week.

This move will also impact industrial uses of ammonia such as AdBlue

This comes as an enormous blow to farmers who are already grappling with constrained supply of nitrogen fertiliser and unprecedented high prices.

This move will also impact industrial uses of ammonia such as AdBlue.

Yara confirmed that it will continue to monitor the situation and try to use its global production system to keep supplying customers and secure continuity in the food supply chain.

Surcharge

Yara is applying surcharges to some industrial industrial products. A surcharge of €511/t will be applied to AdBlue.

The surcharge is said to reflect current gas prices as well as upholding production and Europe-wide distribution.

It is understood that given the extraordinary circumstances, customers may be released from contractual obligations.
