Farmers have registered 270,000 suckler cows with the Department of Agriculture under the Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot (BEEP) scheme, the Irish Farmers Journal can reveal.

This is just over half of the 500,000 cows that were expected to be signed up to the scheme, which is worth €20m. The payment rate under the scheme is €40/calf.

The scheme will focus on improving the efficiency of the beef herd by paying farmers to weigh suckler cows and calves.

The Department of Agriculture is encouraging farmers to apply to the scheme, as the deadline is this Friday, 22 February.
