Almost 100 applications were received by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) for the €1m Farm Plan Scheme for 2020.

Plans had to be submitted from across the country by the closing date of 27 March. Up to €880/ha is available to farmers under this scheme.

“A wide range of species and habitats have been proposed for enhanced management under the farm plan scheme.

“Several proposals were made to deliver innovative and holistic conservation measures for biodiversity within farmland. The applications will be evaluated in the coming weeks,” a spokesperson for the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht told the Irish Farmers Journal.

The NPWS wanted a number of new farm plans across a range of ecological targets and plan types, such as:

  • Species-rich grassland plans.
  • Bird plans.
  • Arable farm-biodiversity plans.
  • Multi-functional high nature value farmland plans.
  • Farm planner panel

The Department also said that over 80 applications for the new NPWS farm planner panel have been received.

The farm planners will design the new measures in the different schemes.

“The applications will be evaluated and a panel will be established in the coming weeks. This panel will be in existence for a period of up to 24 months,” the spokesperson said.

As plans are selected for creation, panellists for that particular plan type will be contacted by the NPWS with a view to tendering for the plan and ultimately a planner or team of planners will be contracted to design the plan and be the planner for the duration of that plan.
