The main function of the monitoring group that is to oversee the Irish grass-fed beef PGI will be policing the use of the new logo.

The PGI application is with the European Commission for consideration and, if successful, a monitoring group with a majority farming representation will be set up. The members of the group will be nominated by the Minister for Agriculture.

According to its terms of reference it will have four main functions:

  • To consider how any added benefit gained from the PGI logo can be fairly distributed along the supply chain.
  • To report any concerns of the use of the logo to the Beef Market Taskforce and the relevant authorities.
  • To monitor the use of the PGI Irish Grass fed Beef in trade through assessment of market information.
  • To consider if there is a need for advertising campaigns to communicate the value of grass-fed beef to consumers.
