There was over 2,000 lambs in Drumshanbo Mart last Thursday for the annual show and sale of lambs.

Store lambs have started off a very good trade in 2020 and Drumshanbo was no exception to this.

Mart manager Eoin Kane said: “We had a flying trade on the day with an almost 100% clearance.

“We had a couple of great customers around the ring for the store lamb around the 30kg mark, with good store lambs making anywhere from €2.20/kg to €2.50/kg.”

This pen of Texel cross ewe lambs weighed 34kg and sold for €100 (€2.94/kg)

Breeding sheep were also in demand, with a number of pens of light ewe lambs selling for breeding for over €100/head.

“We have another very big entry of hogget ewes at this Thursday’s sheep sale,” Eoin said.

“There seems to be a bit of a push with beef farmers buying store lambs this year.

“Ground is very wet in the northwest and there seems to be lots of grass out there, so lambs are the obvious option to eat it.

“We have a few lads that tried lambs for the first time last year and they are back buying bigger numbers this year. Factory lambs are a great trade and that’s helping confidence,” Eoin said.
