There was a strong turnout of 388 weanlings on offer at Iveragh Co-operative Mart’s first autumn-born weanling sale of the season in Caherciveen on Tuesday.

There were 240 bulls and 140 heifers entered. Trade was quite good and the quality of weanlings on offer was exceptional.

Bulls around 400kg in weight made €2.55/kg, while there was an average of about €2.37/kg paid for the heavier feeding bulls.

These four CH Bulls Lot # 503, born July - Sept 2018, weighing avg 434Kg sold for €1060 each.

The majority of the bulls on offer made €2.30/kg to €2.55/kg on average.

Prices were back 30c/kg to 40c/kg on the same sale last year and this is indicative of the current climate in the beef trade.

Speaking afterwards, mart manager Mike Kissane said: “Coming up to the sale, I was nervous between Brexit and Mercursor and the factory trade, but, under the circumstances, I was pleasantly surprised.

“The top price this year was €2.65. There were serious cattle on offer at €2.55/kg.

“That’s the truth of the market at the moment – there’s no point looking at it through rose-tinted glasses.”

This CH Bull Lot # 502, born Aug 2018, weighing 360Kg sold for €855.

Mike added: “It’s all about quality and never more so than the moment. Plainer cattle are struggling to make €2/kg at the moment.”

Demand was mainly from a mixture of feedlot and farmer buyers.

Most of the bulls over 380kg were going for an under-16-month bull-beef system, while some of the lighter animals went to farmer buyers with a view to running them at grass as steers.

These five CH Bulls Lot # 501, born July - Sept 2018, weighing avg 429Kg sold for €1025 each.

In the heifer sale, the tops of the sale were selling at about €2.30/kg and a little bit along with it.

Slightly plainer second-quality heifers were making in or around €2.15/kg, while plainer heifers sold for €2 and a little under at times.

As well as those bought for feeding, there were a few lots bought for breeding.

These were a strong trade and sold mainly from €2.40/kg to €2.60/kg, depending on quality.

But the majority were exceptional-quality red Limousin heifers.

Commission rates are €9 to the buyer if they pay on the day and 1% to the seller, with a €5/head entry fee, subject to a minimum charge of €5 and a maximum of €12/head.
