Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed confirmed he has sought €100m in retrospective compensation for beef farmers affected by Brexit.

Pressed for details of the Brexit aid package he and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar have requested from the European Commission, the minister said it was “in the order of the IFA analysis of €100m losses”.

“Beef farmers have major bills to pay to the feed merchants, banks and others. Incomes have been destroyed,” IFA livestock committee chair Angus Woods said, one of a number of the organisation’s leaders to address the Beef Summit. Responding, Minister Creed said An Taoiseach had spoken with European Commission president Jean Claude Juncker about the package.
