Diesel prices are due to jump by 2c/l this weekend according to a number of oil wholesalers who are notifying customers to this effect. For most suppliers this will be the second price rise this week and it continues a steady rise that has taken place early April.

In recent days suppliers have been quoting in the rage of 62c/l to 65c/l excluding VAT depending on location and order size. These prices are equal to 70.3c/l and 73.8c/l including 13.5% VAT.

This means that for many farmers and agri-contractors green diesel has risen by 4c/l over the past month. For a 140hp tractor used for tillage work or mowing and using about 350l in a long day the increase adds about €15 to daily running cost.

One factor that has driven the increase in prices this year has been political tensions between the USA and Iran. The latest spike is blamed on US president Donald Trump’s threat this week to impose new export sanctions on Iran.
