Elaine Farrell has been appointed as secretary of the IFA national council, which is the governing body of the IFA.

She takes up the role from Bryan Barry, who is retiring after 34 years of service with the IFA.

Farrell, a native of Castletownroche, Co Cork, has worked for the IFA for over 25 years.

She currently oversees its engagement with the Oireachtas, the retail sector and co-ordinates its Brexit activities.

The IFA national council approved the appointment on Friday.

Experience

IFA president Tim Cullinan said: “Elaine will bring vast experience and energy to the role, which is an important part of the governance structure of [the] IFA.”

IFA director general Damian McDonald welcomed Farrell to the new role.

“I want to welcome Elaine to this key role in the association and thank Bryan Barry for his outstanding service to farmers in his 34 years with the Irish Farmers’ Association,” he said.

Farrell said she looked forward to taking up the role: “As the largest representative organisation for farmers in Ireland, [the] IFA is a very important voice for farmers and I will work with our elected officers on national council to continue our work.”

Farrell will continue to oversee the IFA’s engagement with the Oireachtas.
