Up to 1m of snow could fall in parts of the east between Thursday and Friday, Evelyn Cusack of Met Éireann has warned.

Speaking on the RTÉ Six One News on Thursday evening, she said that the country is in for very serious weather conditions over the coming days.

A status red snow-ice warning is in effect for Munster and Leinster until 6.00pm on Friday.

Blizzard conditions affecting southern and eastern coastal counties are expected to receive exceptionally high accumulations, Met Éireann said.

Meanwhile, a status red snow-ice warning is also in place for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal until 6.00am on Friday.

Here, sub-zero temperatures and icy conditions will continue on Thursday night in strong easterly winds with heavy snow showers and high accumulations in some areas.

The Met Office in Northern Ireland has an amber warning in place until 10.00am on Friday.

Snow showers are likely to be replaced by a more persistent spell of snow overnight, primarily across the south of Northern Ireland, leading to further significant accumulations with drifting.

The Met Office said that delays and cancellations to all forms of transport are likely.

Roads may become blocked by deep snow and some rural communities might become cut off, it warned.
