Watch: full clearance for organic cattle in Elphin Mart

On Monday evening, Elphin Mart held its weekly sale, with a special sale for organic cattle on the night.

Mart manager Ciaran Lynch described the trade as “exceptional, with a full clearance across the board".

"There was plenty of men for the organic cattle, with men going home disappointed they didn’t buy anything," he said.

"Both bulls and heifers were sought after, with heifer weanlings crossing the €5.50/kg mark on several occasions.

"We also had a fantastic trade for bull weanlings on the night. Trade was up on the previous week, with a number of exporters going toe to toe for the top-quality bull weanlings weighing over 350kg.

Strong entry

“We had a strong entry of over 40 cows, with an increase in farmers selling cows that are tested inside the 30 days as a result of the new TB rules.

"Young continental-cross cows are the best trade, with the top-end lots making €4/kg.

"Grass buyers dominate the trade for cows intended for summer grazing, with fleshed cows not as sought after as the stores.

"There was a number of cull bulls sold on Monday evening, with one Angus bull weighing 1,135kg making €3,790.”
