US – USDA upgrades outlook for 2018 corn production

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has raised its forecast for this season’s maize (corn) harvest by 9m tonnes. The USDA now forecasts corn production in the US to be just over 345m tonnes for 2018 due to higher yields in many states.

Brazil – outlook for maize production downgraded

The USDA has also downgraded its forecast for Brazilian maize (corn) production for the 2018/19 season by 1.5m tonnes as a result of weaker yields. Brazilian corn production for this year is now forecast at 94.5m tonnes.

Australia – 2017/18 milk production increase 3% year on year

After a difficult year for dairy farmers during the 2016/17 season, Australian milk production 2017/18 milking season (July-June) rebounded strongly thanks to stronger milk prices. Australian milk production for the 2017/18 season increased 3% year on year to 9.25bn litres.

Netherlands – beef imports increase strongly in 2018

Dutch beef imports for the first four months of 2018 showed double-digit growth of 12% to hit 138,000t. Dutch beef exports for the same period are down 1% to 152,400t, with shipments to the UK market back a significant 24% as a result of the weak sterling.
