Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon is targeting the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to help fund a farm succession scheme.

Ireland will hold the EU presidency from 1 July to 31 December 2026. Many of the negotiations around the next CAP will take place in this time.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Minister Heydon said the Irish Government can only look at short-term interventions until the next CAP.

“I don’t have a pot of €200m or €300m to pull out of right now, the next opportunity to develop a very significant scheme of that scale, which is what you would want for a full succession scheme, would be as part of the new CAP.

“The work for that starts now because to put the blocks in place for what a scheme would look like would take a significant amount of time.”
