The annual Irish Tillage and Land Use Society winter conference takes place next Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 December in the Clanard Court Hotel in Athy, Co Kildare.

The society is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019. Earlier in the year, they hosted a special anniversary summer field meeting which looked back on developments in the sector over the last 50 years.

The focus of this year’s winter conference is to look forward into the medium to long term, exploring how future developments may affect the way we run our businesses. The conference takes place over two days.

Day one

On Wednesday evening, the opening session will examine the "Economic and environmental road ahead".

Speakers for that session will be economist Colm McCarthy, environmental scientist Dr Cara Augustenborg and the Teagasc director Prof Gerry Boyle. The session will be chaired by tillage farmer John Stokes.

Day two

On Thursday morning, Irish Farmers Journal tillage editor Andy Doyle will take a look at the milestones of the organisation over the years.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, ITLUS published a book detailing the historical achievements and records of the organisation over the past 50 years.

This will be followed by two sessions. The first will see Bill Callanan of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food deliver the keynote address about the prospects for tillage towards 2050.

The second session will see Ed Flatman from French cooperative Limagrain discuss new technologies in cereal breeding and explore how they will affect crop production in the medium to long term.

Louise Brinkworth from Corteva Agriscience will also discuss what we can expect from plant breeders and the plant protection industry in future. This session will be chaired by Cork From the Tramline farmer Rob Coleman.

After lunch Ewan McFarlane of Origin Enterprises, Darragh Mullin of New Holland and Prof Kevin McDonnell of UCD will examine developments in machinery and big data and how they will change the way we farm in the future.

Booking

The cost of attending this conference is €50, this includes lunch on Thursday. Dinner will be available in the hotel after the session on Wednesday evening. However, this must be paid for separately and booked in advance.

Anyone wishing to attend this event must contact the ITLUS secretary by 28 November either via email at itlussec50@gmail.com or through this link.
