John Deere has put in place a new system on its cab displays and GPS receivers that is similar to the PIN code locking system used in smartphones. Until now, these displays and receivers could only be locked mechanically.

The PIN code is entered on the in-cab display, unlocking both display and receiver. If the user happens to forget their passcode, work can be continued for 72 hours. After this a master unlock code can be accessed using the operator’s MyJohnDeere login details on the StellarSupport online portal.

The locking system is available for the 4240 and 4640 John Deere universal displays and the StarFire 6000 receiver. Deere’s recent 19-1 software update allows use of the new security feature.

Security

John Deere claims its 6 series tractors right up to its 9 series sold in the UK and Ireland are already fitted with a range of safety features. These features include the Ceasar Datatag security system and an immobiliser system whereby each tractor has a uniquely programmed key. Other John Deere keys will still fit the doors and ignition but will not start the tractor without the proper key.

In addition, all 7R, 8R, and 9R series tractors are fitted as standard with JDLink telematics (optional on 6R series tractors), with one year’s communications licence free. JDLink also gives users the ability to geofence machines, sending alerts if the machine leaves the pre-set boundary.

JDLink also allows a curfew to be set, warning the owner if the machine has been started before or after set times (say, between 10pm and 6am).
