A landowner and a contractor were fined €750 and €1,000 respectively at Nenagh District Court for cutting a hedge during the bird nesting season.

Both men pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined and ordered to pay legal costs of €1,200 plus VAT each by Judge Cormac Dunne.

The offence involved the destruction of vegetation growing in a hedge in and around 10 April 2019 during the bird nesting season at Tiermoyle, Nenagh, Co Tipperary, according to the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), which took the case.

Evidence from NPWS ranger Dr Áine Lynch showed severe cutting and/or grubbing resulting in the removal of half the width of the hedgerow along 830m of property perimeter.

Another 830m of internal hedgerows were completely removed during the bird nesting season.
