A huge crowd of burgeoning young farmers attended the annual Macra na Feirme national conference held in LIT, Thurles, and Clonmel Park Hotel over the bank holiday weekend.

The theme of the conference was Sustainability in a Challenging World, and European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan gave a wide-ranging frank interview with RTÉ Countrywide presenter Damien O’Reilly.

The Commissioner spoke warmly of the positive impact Macra had on the lives of future young farmers and told the audience the organisation had taught him how to “talk up and then shut up.”

€250,000 for local economy

A number of competitions were held across the weekend and Macra estimates that the conference generated €250,000 for the local economy.

Two panel discussions focussing on Market Sustainability for Young Farmers in Post-Brexit Ireland and Enjoying a Healthy Work/Life Balance in Agriculture were also part of the weekend and gave food for thought on the future of agriculture.
