Ornua’s purchase price index (PPI) rose by 1.3% in May, to return a farmgate price of 30.5c/l excluding VAT. This is the second increase in a row.

In April, it rose by 1.7%, recovering part of the losses observed in March.

"The adjustment for May reflects higher powder prices and flat returns for butter, combining to offset lower cheddar returns," a spokesperson for Ornua said.

However, the latest Global Dairy Trade auction saw prices slip by 3.4%.

Co-ops will set milk prices for May from next week.
