By separating animal by-products into single species it is possible to significantly increase value for the pet food market.
Speaking at the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society’s conference in Dunblane, last week, Fane Valley chief executive Trevor Lockhart said by changing the process in his business, it had increased the value of byproducts from £120/t to £1,000/t.
Our pet food customers are becoming increasingly discerning
He explained how Fane Valley’s red meat division, Linden foods (which is 50% owned by ABP), increased demand from the pet food market.
“Our pet food customers are becoming increasingly discerning.”
He also told conference delegates they were harvesting gelatine from bones, which effectively turned category III animal waste to a premium pharmaceutical product.
