A ‘steak’ made from soya and wheat protein is available in 42 Tesco Ireland stores from this week, retailing at €4.00.

The plant-based ‘steak’ also has added iron and vitamin B12.

Made by Dutch manufacturer Vivera, it is described as being "barely distinguishable from real steak" in its taste, texture and smell.

Fresh and frozen foods director at Tesco Ireland Joe Manning said that Tesco this week launched the Vivera veggie steak, as well as a number of other vegan-friendly products from brands such as Gosh, Tofu and Cork-based Dee’s Wholefoods.

Innovation

“We’re passionate about innovation and we’re delighted to bring these game-changing meat-free alternatives to vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian customers in Ireland.

“With Vivera, it’s an entirely plant-based product that’s made to imitate the look, flavour and texture of traditional animal-based steak; including the use of natural, plant-based colouring to create the pink centre.

"It’s ideal for customers seeking to add something different to their diet when it comes to meat-free alternatives,” he said.

In May of this year, Tesco launched the veggie ‘steak’ into 400 of its stores in the UK market.

Vivera has a current production of more than one million meat replacements a week, making it one of the three largest producers in Europe.
