The weanling bull section was the star attraction in Macroom in a sale that had 400 bulls on offer.

Heavier weanlings were very evident for the first time in a while at the show and sale.

Cattle were split pretty evenly between forward weanlings above 375kg and lighter cattle.

Most of the potential R and U grade type stock penned for sale were Charolais and Limousin animals.

This 325kg bull born April 2017 sold for €995 or €3.06/kg.

“I’m managing here nine years now and the stock keep improving,” said mart manager John O’Mahony.

“The farmers have to be complimented for focusing on breeding and presenting such consistent stock for sale.”

The champion bull weanling of the show was a Blonde d’Aquitaine owned by Sean Lynch of Clondrohid.

This pen of bulls born January 2017 weighed 405kg on average and sold for €1,070/hd or €2.64/kg.

Most cattle sold made between €380 and €685 with their weight in what was a very solid trade, with consistency the key.

Bulls from 375kg upwards generally sold for between €2.20/kg and €2.50/kg, with a few falling either side of that price range.

This pen of bulls born January 2017 weighed 347kg on average and sold for €915/hd or €2.64/kg.
