Farmers have until 15 October 2026 to declare their closing fertiliser stocks on the National Fertiliser Database, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has said.

Closing stocks are classified as any fertiliser on hand at 11.59pm on 14 September each year.

The facility for declaring 2026 closing stock declarations opens on 15 September.

It is a legal requirement for all professional fertiliser users, including farmers, to submit an annual closing stock declaration to the database, including nil declarations where no fertiliser is held.

Declarations can be completed by farmers or their advisers on MyAgFood.ie.

Farmers and other fertiliser users are encouraged to check their fertiliser transaction records on MyAgFood.ie and ensure the information recorded is accurate and up to date.

Where fertiliser is supplied to a farmer through a contractor, the relevant transaction should be allocated against the customer’s herd number. Contractors can do this using the “farm to farm transfer” on MyAgFood.ie.

Details of sales on the database are recorded by fertiliser merchants or fertiliser economic operators and it is their responsibility to ensure the accuracy of data on the database in respect of their customers.

Farmers who have queries regarding purchases of fertilisers should raise concerns with their merchant directly in the first instance.

Where a farmer does have remaining fertiliser at the end of the year, the closing stock declaration should include the type of fertiliser and the quantities of each being held.
