Just over €223m was spent by the Department of Agriculture on administration costs last year, according to its annual review and outlook published this week.

The figures mark a marginal increase from €216m spent on Department administration in 2016, but are still a considerable drop from the €243m spent in 2010.

Over €162m was spent by the Department on salaries and allowances. Included at the top of the allowances list was office machinery which cost over €30m, followed by travel and subsistence at €7.7m and laboratory equipment which came to €6.4m. Incidental expenses amounted to just over €5m in 2017.
