Farmer demand remains quite strong at marts right across the country. While reducing, numbers are higher than the same time last year, as the strong prices are enticing sellers with stock to the mart ring.

The trade is steady, with some marts reporting a slightly improved trade again this week, but only for certain types of stock. Where plainer-quality cattle are on offer, some mart managers have said that these were a little slower to sell compared with last week.

The cow trade is firm where stores suitable for turning out to grass are on offer

The weanling trade is extremely strong, with farmers commenting on the small difference in prices paid for good-quality weanling bulls and heifers and the equivalent quality light store animal weighing 400kg to 450kg.

The cow trade is firm where stores suitable for turning out to grass are on offer, but where those carrying flesh and suitable for a short finish are on offer, these are a slightly improved trade with some increased feeder activity in areas.

Steers

Forward store continental bullocks over 600kg are steady, with prices at €2.05/kg to €2.15/kg for average-quality types and better-quality bullocks from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg. Forward store bullocks from 500kg to 600kg are selling from €2.10/kg to €2.20/kg, with U grades making over €2.40/kg. Lighter stores have been a slightly better trade, with prices edging up slightly by about 3c/kg or €12 to €15/head. The average 450kg bullock is making just under €1,000/head. The top third are making from €1,100 to €1,200/head.

Heifers

The heifer trade is stronger than the equivalent bullock trade. The average 600kg heifer is scarce, but making from €1,200 to €1,450 for top-quality types. Those from 500kg to 600kg are still being met with good farmer and feeder demand and prices are from €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg, with U grades over €2.50/kg in some areas. Angus and Herefords are from €1.80/kg to over €2.00/kg. Light store heifers from 400kg to 500kg are a strong trade, with plenty of demand. The average 450kg heifer is making €1,000 with U grades over €1,150.

Weanlings

The weanling trade remains very strong, with farmers driving the trade for all quality types. The difference in price between the average weanling bull or heifer and the average light store is negligible, with prices running at similar levels. The majority of good-quality weanlings are making from €850 to €950, with some going over €1,000. Plain-quality Angus and Limousin weanlings are still a weaker trade and are making from €650 to €780/head. Feeding bulls over 450kg are selling mainly from €1,000 to €1,150/head.
