Harvesting in Co Cork

Contractor Michael Cooney, from Ballyhooly, Co Cork, harvesting wholecrop winter barley with his team of workers. Michael has sold the crop to a local dairy farmer. A John Deere 8600 harvester is being used to cut the crop, along with a Quickcut disc header and Kernelstar proccessor. The crop was sown on 20 October last year and looks likely to be a high yield. Michael says he can see an opportunity this year for some dairy farmers to use wholecrop to fill forage requirements and for tillage farmers to take advantage of the good spell of weather. \ Donal O’Leary
