Some say farming is a vocation. If that's the case then, Clonakilty native Fr John Kingston has dual vocation status.

Fr Kingston is based in Chimoio, Mozambique, east Africa, and his work involves teaching locals how to farm.

The church has approximately 100ha of land suitable for farming in Chimoio, which the state will reclaim if it goes unused. This land provides locals with livelihoods and education but lacks proper tools or farm machinery.

A group of west Cork farmers have got together to try to help farmers in Mozambique through a 40km or 100km cycle.

Raising funds

The West Cork Fundraising Community is made up of a small group of members of West Cork’s farming community who are trying to raise funds to buy a tractor and farm supplies to send to Fr Kingston. This isn’t the first agricultural venture undertaken by Fr Kingston. He previously undertook a similar project in Angola.

The event starts and finishes at Clonakilty showgrounds on Sunday 22 June and consists of a 40km or 100km cycle option. Online entry costs €35, or €40 for entry on the day.
