Farmers participating in the Green Low-Carbon Agri-Environmental Scheme (GLAS) are permitted to graze wild bird cover crops from Sunday 15 March.

The opening of the grazing window may provide a reprieve for many farmers struggling to get stock outdoors due to difficult ground conditions or sheep farmers starting to run low on grass supplies.

The allowance to graze crops is seen as aiding preparation for this year’s crop. Whatever vegetation is suitable for consumption is removed through grazing while any thrash is walked on and broken down by grazing animals. The deadline for replanting is 31 May 2020.
