Based on an annual salary of €56,516, the estimated full-year cost of recruiting 100 veterinary inspectors to do customs checks post-Brexit would be €5.65m, the Minister for Agriculture has said.

Veterinary inspectors are employed in various business areas throughout the Department of Agriculture, including food safety, animal health and welfare, among others.

The salary range for veterinary inspectors is €56,516 to €90,683.

Minister Creed made the statement in response to a parliamentary question from Thomas Broughan.

The Government announced in July that it was preparing to hire about 1,000 customs and veterinary inspectors for the country's ports and airports should a no-deal Brexit happen.
