Already acknowledged at the age of just 20 as one of the world’s most exciting and talented show jumpers, Wexford’s Bertram Allen was named The Irish Field Show Jumper of the Year for the second successive year.

Ranked as World No 9, show jumper Bertram Allen collected his award at Monday’s Irish Horse World awards in the K Club, Straffan, Co Kildare, following a rollercoaster year of top wins on the world’s elite show jumping circuit in 2015.

In the last 12 months, Allen has truly taken the global show jumping scene by storm, posting one top drawer five-star Grand Prix win after another, as well as taking the bronze medal for Ireland in the Rolex Longines World Cup in Las Vegas and playing his part on the senior Irish show jumping team that won the Aga Khan Trophy at the RDS last August.

He was also nominated for his extraordinary year for the FEI Rising Star Award and the young rider is on course to earn Ireland a place in the individuals at this summer’s Rio Olympics.

Allen’s extraordinary series of major wins in 2015 included:

• February: Winning a World Cup class at Bordeaux (riding Romanov).

• April: third in the World Cup final in April in Las Vegas (riding Molly Malone V).

JENNIFER KUEHNLE

Thirteen-year-old Co Laois teenager, Jennifer Kuehnle, won The Irish Field Junior Show jumper of the Year Award for her gold medal win in the 2015 European Championships in Austria.

The only Irish rider in the final, Jennifer was up against three German riders but produced another sensational performance, delivering two perfect rounds on Chaitanya 2 to bring the gold medal home to Ireland in the children on horses Championships.

MICHAEL RYAN

Cork eventer, Michael Ryan, won The Irish Field Senior Event Rider of the Year Award. Ryan climbed an impressive 39 places after the dressage phase to record his best ever finish at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.

Ryan and Ballylynch Adventure, owned by Carol and Tom Henry and Sheila Foley and bred by John B. Hughes, were one of the few combinations from among the world’s best event riders to leave all the coloured fences intact to finish ninth overall in the huge sporting event.

CATHAL DANIELS

Galway’s Cathal Daniels (19), also short listed for the Rio Olympics, won The Irish Field Junior Event Rider of the Year for the second successive year.

Cathal, a former European junior team gold medallist and individual silver medallist, had a memorable 2015, becoming the only Irish event rider to record a win at the international show in Ballindenisk, Co Cork, landing the CIC** class with Sammy Davis Junior.

Daniels was rewarded with selection for his Nations Cup debut a week later at Boekello in The Netherlands, where he partnered Rioghan Rua (ISH), who is still just an eight-year-old. An incredible performance from Daniels and the Irish team saw them win their first ever eventing Nations Cup since the series began in 2012.

JUDY REYNOLDS

Kildare’s Judy Reynolds, who is now in real contention for a place in the individuals at the Rio Olympics, won The Irish Field Dressage Rider of the Year for the second consecutive year.
