The newly formed Beef Plan Movement is to hold its first meeting in NI next week.

The group was formed in the Republic of Ireland last year and has been holding meetings across the country in recent weeks.

It has an 86-point plan to change the beef industry and return more money to the primary producer.

Included within that plan is the potential to set up producer groups for increased bargaining power with factories, and getting more transparency on carcase trim.

It has threatened to hold cattle off factories if initial demands around sustainable prices are not met.

The movement also has WhatsApp groups set up in every county and claims to have over 15,000 WhatsApp members across Ireland.

Eamon Corley from the Beef Plan Movement said that the biggest group in NI is currently in Armagh.

“We have around 300 farmers in Armagh that are familiar with the plan and are following what we are doing,” he said.

Corley said that the movement is being extended to NI after several NI farmers approached organisers about joining.

“We are going to see how it goes. If the people in the north have an appetite for it, we will try and provide any assistance and help that we can,” he said.

The first Beef Plan Movement meeting in NI takes place in Ballymacnab Community Hall near Armagh on Thursday 17 January from 8pm.

Corley said there will be a register available on the night for farmers to formally join the group, and this includes a £10 fee to cover administration and venue hire costs.
