An estimated 1,100 people attended last Tuesday’s National BETTER Farm walk on Donie Aherne’s farm in Limerick. Donie explained that the finishing systems being run on the farm include under 16 months, under 20 month systems and heifers finished under 22 months.

Grass is the key to the system with all bulls turned out to grass in the second season to exploit cheap weight gain prior to the 100-day intensive finishing period.

Drafting bulls for slaughter and assessing fat covers was one of the demonstrations that took place after the farm walk. Kepak Procurement Manager Jonathan Forbes demonstrated to the crowds how to assess the fat cover on bulls pre-slaughter, and the areas of the animal to focus on when doing so.
