To be honest, I cried the day I got my leaving cert results (and unfortunately not out of happiness). It is a day filled with emotions and there is a lot of pressure on students to get the results they feel they deserve (from parents and teachers too). Most of the pressure I felt I put on myself.

I opened my results and saw straight away the H2 in English, which I was expecting to be a H1, and the H3 in ag science that I was expecting a H2 in. I was instantly filled with disappointment and anger that I was robbed of these grades. I didn’t want to go out to celebrate with my friends, but my mum knew I had achieved exceptional results (especially with my dyslexia) and she convinced me to go out and celebrate the hard work I put in over the last two years.

Looking back now, I would tell my past self that those results were great. I ended up getting my preferred course in the second round of the CAO and just because I didn’t get my expected grade in my two favourite subjects doesn’t mean I didn’t do well. No one has asked me what points I got in the leaving cert since the day I got my results.

So, if you are disappointed in your results, that’s ok, but still take a minute to celebrate getting through the exams, finishing secondary school and reaching this exciting chapter in your life. The world is your oyster and with all the alternative routes to education available to students now, there are plenty of back routes available.

Calculating points

Results are given to students in the form of grades. You will have to calculate the points received by taking the highest top three subjects and calculating the CAO points associated with that grade.Use the table below to familiarise yourself with the different % bands. It is a good idea for students to take a calculator with them when collecting results in school or obtaining them online. I would recommend getting someone to cross-check your results for you to make sure you calculated them correctly.

Grading for LCVP link modules

Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme
Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) students follow the same assessment method and grading scale of Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) for their subject examinations. Grades for LCVP link modules are aligned with the current leaving cert grading system and equivalent points.

Example of the points system

So, for example, a student at the higher level who scores between 90%-100% will score an H1 and get 100 points in that subject. A student at the ordinary level who scores between 90%-100% will receive an O1 and get 56 points in that subject. Points are calculated based on the results of the six best subjects in one year’s leaving cert sitting.
