Dear Editor,

I am 14 and in second year. I have been studying climate change for a while and I have learned some things about it.

Ireland is one of the worst polluters in Europe and we release 12.6t of CO2 into the atmosphere per year per person (2018 data, CSO). That’s slightly more than three Asian elephants, which are very big.

If the world polluted as much as Ireland did, we would need three and a half planets to be sustainable, which is very bad.

There are some people who try to fight climate change like Greta Thunberg with her campaign “Fridays for Future”.

I honestly think it’s terrible that the person who is fighting climate change the most, is a girl who only recently turned 18. It just shows how little politicians care about it.

Govenment mist do more

If the Irish Government cared a bit more they should put less tax on electric cars. If global warming increases by 2°C, more than 70% of the Earth’s coastlines will see sea levels rise greater than 0.2 metres, resulting in increased coastal flooding, beach erosion, salinisation of water supplies and other impacts on humans and ecological systems.

All governments need to do more in my opinion and I hope things change soon.
