Over the course of 2016 we looked closely at issues in relation to the accuracy of data being recorded by some pedigree breeders.

The introduction of a whole herd performance recording programme where the data provided by breeders will be independently verified is welcome. It will provide most breeders who are recording accurate information the platform to protect their credibility. The Irish Limousin Society along with secretary Paul Sykes should be given great credit for showing necessary leadership and supporting the initiative.

While other societies appear to be dragging their heels, it will be down to individual breeders within these societies to recognise that the confidence of commercial farmers is key to the success of pedigree breeders.

The Irish Farmers Journal is committed to helping deliver this and will work with the sector in 2017 to promote those breeders that are signed up to the whole herd scheme to ensure commercial farmers see the value of the extra investment being made.
