Milk production in the US Midwest is up by 4.6% between January and May this year when the overall increase in the US is 1.7% for the same period.
There are now fears the present capacity will not be able to handle the extra volumes, with some reports of producers forced to dump milk as production reaches its seasonal peak.
Dairy Farmers of America have come together with two other dairy co-ops to explore the possibility of building a cheese plant. The retail giant Walmart is planning to build a new processing plant at Fort Wayne, Indiana.
