The Department of Agriculture is investigating allegations that Irish cattle were being shipped to eastern Europe before being taken to Turkey, avoiding a ban on live exports to hot countries during July and August.

“Ireland has, for a number of years, had arrangements in place whereby there is a prohibition for the months of July and August on the endorsement of journey logs for consignments of live animals to certain countries,” a Department of Agriculture spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal. The list of countries includes north Africa, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Croatia.

The Department did not say whether the cattle were going direct from Ireland to eastern Europe and immediately on to Turkey or whether they were sold to European buyers and then moved on after a period of time.
