Whether it’s their special colour, unique shape or penetrating glance, beautiful eyes can truly hypnotise us.

The inner beauty of a person is shown through the eyes; they are, after all, the windows to the soul. Making the most of our eyes boosts our confidence and makes us look and feel brilliant. So, this month, I wanted to share my top tips on how to make your eyes look bright and beautiful.

1. Always wash your hands before applying your makeup as fingers harbour bacteria. Also, keep your brushes and eye makeup properly maintained to avoid painful eye infections. Never apply eye makeup when you’re driving as this is highly dangerous and you could easily scratch or stab your cornea.

2. Eye drops are a winner if you suffer from tired, bloodshot eyes. A few squirts of Optrex refreshing eye drops for tired eyes from your local pharmacy for approximately a fiver will hydrate and relieve the redness, while cucumber slices, cold from the fridge and popped on to the eyes, can really bring down puffiness.

3. Curling your lashes will make your eyes look more awake. Use an eyelash curler to first curl along the very base of your lashes, carefully squeezing the lashes for approximately 20 seconds. Then lash on your mascara, preferably two coats. One of my favourites is Benefit’s They’re Real mascara, as it is long lasting, volumizing and brilliant, available for €26 from Debenhams and other major outlets.

4. Choose a shadow that makes your eyes pop. I adore the sophisticated eye shadow palettes by my favourite makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury – The Golden Goddess and The Rebel – both €50 from www.brownthomas.com.

5. Strong, natural eyebrows frame your face and bring a balance to your features. I have never liked my thin brows, so I booked in to see the incredibly talented permanent makeup artist Elizabeth Oakes, who is based in Navan but also works in clinics nationwide. I admit, I was slightly nervous about the prospect of having permanent new brows, but I was in the safest of hands. The procedure took an hour and it was painless. Elizabeth outlined the new shape of my brows for me to see and once I was happy, the permanent pigment was applied. I was completely thrilled when I saw my new and very natural eyebrows and was so happy to never have to pencil in my wonky old brows again. The cost of the session is €300 and you can find out more on 086-4555-123. See picture (left) for the results.

6. If the thought of permanent makeup does not appeal to you, however, threading or tweezering works brilliantly. Tweezerman slant tweezers (€27.49 from www.boots.ie) are perfect for precision plucking. If you have extremely sensitive eyes, stay away from waxing your brows as it really can be rather harsh and damage your skin around your eyes.

7. Invest in a really good eye cream that reduces wrinkles and firms up the skin to keep you looking youthful. Olay anti-wrinkle firm and lift eye gel, currently on offer for €6.99 on www.boots.ie, works wonders at restoring tired eyes, while Clarins’ masque contour des yeux (RRP €36) is the ultimate SOS treatment for eyes – after a late night. Beware of eye creams that are too rich or greasy, as these can trap dead skin cells and lead to tiny white bumps called milia around the eye area.

8. A diet high in salt, MSG, alcohol or artificial sweeteners can cause excessive puffiness around the eye area. Less salt, plenty of sleep and drinking more water will reduce dark circles under your eyes.

9. To make your eyes appear wider, extend your eyeliner beyond the outer corner of your eyes like you are mimicking a very long eyelash with a product like Rimmel London exaggerate liquid liner RRP €7.29. Do try and apply the eyeliner symmetrically as otherwise your eyes can appear lopsided.

10. If you have small eyes, however, don’t apply eyeliner all the way around the eye as this will make the eyes appear “fenced” by the circle of eyeliner. Instead, use a white liner like Urban Decay 24/7 glide-on eye pencil in “yeyo” on your lower waterline (€19.50 from www.debenhams.ie). This will make the white of your eye whiter and your eyes will look noticeably bigger. Those with small eyes should also avoid the smoky eye look.

Until next time, I hope you enjoy the St Patrick’s Day festivities with your bright and beautiful eyes.

Ask Dolly

Dear Dolly,

I never know what eye shadow suits me best; can you give me some advice?

To choose an eye shadow that will make your eyes sparkle, think about what colour you are wearing when people compliment your eyes, or hold up a bunch of different coloured fabrics to your eyes and have a friend tell you which one suits you best.

As a little helper I think that:

  • Blue eyes suit black, purple, pinks and light greens.
  • Brown eyes suit orange, red, light brown, lavender, gold and moss green.
  • Green eyes suit purple, green, navy dark brown and black
  • Hazel eyes suit black, navy, burgundy and lavender.
