Over the last five years, farmers have made investments in low-emission slurry spreading (LESS) equipment worth millions of euro. Approximately €23.5m has been paid out to farmers for LESS equipment under TAMS II, figures from the Department of Agriculture to the end of last year show.

TAMS II covers up to 40% of expenditure for slurry spreading equipment, meaning the cost to farmers is somewhere in the region of €60m.

Young farmers receive grant aid up to 60% which may lower the farmer spend to a degree.

However, the spend figure only includes items bought through TAMS, so farmer and contractor investment in the emission-lowering technology is likely to be higher.

In total, 1,650 new slurry tankers have been purchased under TAMS. Almost 1,000 trailing shoe attachments, eight shallow injection attachments and 1,000 dribble bar attachments and 115 new umbilical spreaders were purchased.
