The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is appealing to farmers to ensure children at home from school are supervised at all times on farmyards.

“With schools closed and children back at home on farms there is a greater risk of accidents,” chief HSA inspector Pat Griffin said.

“Farmyards should be no go areas unless supervised by an adult.”

With slurry spreading in full swing, he reminded farmers that over the last decade 17 out of the 21 child deaths on farms involved machinery, usually tractors.

Griffin said the other danger was falling objects, including bales or machinery. He asked farmers to view the farmyard though a child’s eyes for any potential dangers and tidy away any potential hazards.
