Five tips for reducing the risk of calf scour in suckler herds
Suckler cows calving in early spring are likely to remain housed for a period, increasing the risk of calf scour. Outlined are five tips to reducing the risk posed to calves.
Providing calves with a clean straw bedded creep area reduces the risk of animals developing calf scour.
Getting calves up and sucking the cow as quickly as possible increases colostrum intakes and reduces the risk of scour.
Clipping a cow's tail helps to keep udders clean, reducing the risk of calf scour. But this should only be carried out if cows can be safely restrained.
On suckler farms calving during February and March, freshly calved cows will most likely remain housed until ground conditions permit cattle getting out to grass.
When newborn calves remain housed after birth, they are more susceptible to scours.
