Heifers proving in-calf on beef units are causing a major problem. The fact that an increasing number of these units are now operating as feedlots and as such animals can only be sold directly for slaughter, further compounds the problem of dealing with a young calf. There is a real onus on both the seller and marts to ensure all steps are taken to avoid beef heifers being inseminated. At this stage, spring-born heifers should be grazing separately to bull calves. Of course accidents do happen. Where the animal was traded through a mart, the manager clearly has a responsibility to ensure a fair outcome for both parties.
